Thank you for a wonderful year! Your children are now fourth graders! They worked hard and learned so much this year, and I will forever remember them as my final class here at Shorecrest. As you know, I have spent 18 years in education. This has been a wonderfully rewarding career! With my children all grown up and a new husband (as of next week!), it seemed like a good time to explore other options. I'm sure I will still see most of you throughout the years as my home is in St. Petersburg, and I plan to attend many Shorecrest events.
Thank you all for your generosity on my birthday as well as the letters of appreciation you and your children wrote to me.

May 20th
Hello Everyone!
Well, we are getting very close to the end now! The children are doing a wonderful job staying focused in spite of this, and I'm so proud of them for that. Of course, I have bribed them with a couple of fun end of the year activities...
*Next Thursday (May 30th) we will have Games Day. They are allowed to bring in a game to share with the class...please nothing expensive. We also have our end of the year party that afternoon.
*The last day of school is a half day. We will end the year with a Reading Day. Your child may bring in a small pillow, blanket or beach towel, along with some favorite books or magazines to read.
Other Class News...
We do not have a spelling or vocabulary test this week. We are still having homework all week.
Explorer projects are due on Thursday. Students may begin bringing them in on Wednesday if they are ready.
Our "Author's Celebration" is really more than that. We hope you can join us next Wednesday at 8:30 to see all the hard work that has gone into their Science projects, Social Studies projects, Technology projects, as well as our Fiction writing. Fun!

May 13th
Happy Monday!
The students have been hard at work creating their science projects. The goal was to explore a topic of interest related to our field trip at Sawgrass Lake Park. The students needed to become an "expert" on a topic and how it relates to our Florida environment. The projects will be completed this week and on display for our final Author's Celebration during the final week of school.
Speaking of our Author's Celebration...We hope you can join us on Wednesday, May 29th at 8:30 a.m. to see our final published writing piece, view our science projects, as well as our explorer projects! We've been working hard and want to show it off!
This week we will have a spelling test as well as a vocabulary quiz on Friday. It is also Splash Day this Friday. Please refer to the letter the PE teachers sent last week for details.

Hello Everyone,
We are in the midst of finalizing our science projects in class. The children are learning a lot and also enjoying this type of work! They do have a social studies project that I will explain to them in class. The majority of the work will be completed at home, and I will consider that when assigning homework. The project is due May 23. In the past, the students have greatly enjoyed this assignment and are proud of their finished product.
Dr. Bianco's weekly lower division update was filled with much helpful information so I am including it here:
We have a wonderful week ahead of us! Here are some upcoming events and activities that you might want to have on your agendas:
Ms. Cameron's student, Blake Ewert, will be Principal for the Day on Friday, May 10. As Principal for the Day, Blake would like to give permission for students to wear their favorite shirts. So Friday is Spirit Day and Wear Your Favorite Shirt To School Day.
Mom-Kid Night at a Rays Game is on Saturday, May 11 at 6:10PM.
The last ADHD Support Group meeting of the year is May 15th and Ellen Moss a Speech and Language Pathologist will speak about ADHD and dyslexia.
Memorial Day is Monday, May 27. NO SCHOOL.
Friday, May 31 is the last day of school and all students will be dismissed at noon. Extended Care is available until 5:30PM for parents who require afternoon care for their children. Please contact Betty Gootson (not Monica Stypinski) to make a reservation for your child. Children who are staying will need to bring lunch from home, as Sage will not be serving that day.
A little house keeping on issues of dress code and dismissal, if you will permit me:
There has been a dress code questions that has come up recently about boy's socks. What are they allowed to wear? Boys may wear white, navy blue, black, beige or forest green colored socks. On spirit days, gold is fine.
The other question that has come up has to do with dismissal. At the end of the day children who are not staying for clubs or after school programs need to be picked up at Charger Blvd. If a LD student has a MD or ECC sibling, they may, with permission, be picked up at Pratt Blvd. Students whose parents want to arrive early and meet their child on campus may meet their parents at the picnic tables (not in the breezeway or at the library). Lower division children may not walk to the library unsupervised. The library is only used after school for students who want to do homework (we ask that parents stay by their sides and supervise). Thank you.
I've heard that some of the children are beginning to go into summer mode. As I told the children this morning, school is not over until it is over. We have three more weeks and we work hard until the very last day. There is much to be gained in the next three weeks.

The students began ERB testing today. They were very focused and tried their best, and that's all I can ask. We will begin each day with the tests, and our final day of testing is Thursday. Please ensure a good night's sleep, healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time.
I've noticed that some of the children are forgetting to bring in a snack or are choosing unhealthy snacks. Please check to see that they have a healthy snack each day. They really do need this little pick me up mid-morning!
Due to ERB testing, we will not have homework or any tests/quizzes this week!
We enjoyed our field trip downtown to look at the architecture of Saint Petersburg. Mrs. Elwyn was our tour guide, and she did an outstanding job as always.

Hello Everyone,
This week we are going on an architectural field trip this Friday...weather permitting! It is a wonderful trip to downtown St. Petersburg with Mrs. Elwyn who is also a Shorecrest parent. Please be sure to ask your child about what they learned!
We will have a spelling test and a vocabulary quiz this Friday. The children will also have book checkout before we leave on our field trip.
We are spending this week learning test taking strategies and reviewing pertinent skills for our ERB testing next week. By the way... ERB stands for Educational Records Bureau. The ERB tests are not used for grading purposes. It is a measurement for your child in reading skills and math skills. Since third grade is the first year for your child's testing, it will provide baseline data. Please ask me if you have other questions regarding testing next week.

School News:
This week is Celebrate the Arts. The children will hear a drummer and a rock band this week in addition to their performance this Friday at 11:00. We hope you plan on joining us for this event as well as a picnic lunch afterwards!
School is closed on Monday, April 22nd.
ERB testing begins April 29th. The children should still bring a snack. It is highly encouraged to ensure a good night's rest as well a good breakfast.

By now, hopefully, your child has shared that they will be working with a small group or partner to investigate further about a science topic of interest related to our field trip. The work for this project will be completed primarily in class. We look forward to sharing with you when all is complete!
We have new vocabulary words that will be tested on April 26th:
calendar, carnival, experience, govern, gulf, haste, hasty, nation, national, scatter, surrender, thrill
We will have a math test on Tuesday. The practice test is going home on Monday. The spelling test will be on Friday as usual.

This week we began a new class novel called Morning Girl. It is set in the same time as our social studies unit...the age of the European explorers coming to America.
We will begin a new writing unit emphasizing fantasy.
Our math unit will focus on multiplication with parentheses as well as multiplying larger numbers.
We will have a spelling and vocabulary test this Friday.
Please remember that Celebrate the Arts is next Friday. Our architectural field trip will be rescheduled due to rainy weather last Friday. I will let you know the new date. It will not affect lunch time whichever day we go.

Happy April Everyone!
It's hard to believe there are only two more months of school!
There are several important events happening this week.
1) WrAP testing is Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child gets a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast each morning so that they will be better prepared for this writing assessment.
2) Relay for Life is this Friday. We will kick off the day with an all school assembly at 9:00 on the football field. Due to this, we will not have book checkout this week. Students may wear purple shirts all week with the uniform bottoms.
3) Our class is going on an architectural tour of downtown St. Petersburg this Friday after the relay for life kickoff. I can take one chaperone. First one to respond with the desire to help gets to go! :-)

Our next field trip is to Sawgrass Park on Tuesday. Please make sure your child has a consumable sack lunch or has already let Sage know that they need a sack lunch. We will eat at the park. This trip will launch our next Science unit and project.
The children are learning to write to a prompt to practice for the WrAP test that will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
We are continuing to read The Whipping Boy as a class novel and focusing on using context clues to gain meaning from this text.

Children in the third and fourth grade will be taking the WRap (which is a "standardized" writing assessment independent schools administer) next Tuesday and Wednesday morning. It is very important that your child arrive for the start of school - 8:00AM. At this time of year, especially during testing, we think it would be best for our third and fourth grade students if parents said their goodbyes to their children outside of the third and fourth grade corridor. In the north breezeway is better, instead of walking the children to their lockers. Used Clothing Drive One of our former students is collecting clothes. Please read note below: "My name is Jessica J. and I am in seventh grade. My father goes to Jamaica every year to do charity heart surgery on children with congenital heart disease with the mission group Cardiac Kids Foundation. I am doing a clothing drive to collect clothing from the students in Lower Division for the less fortunate children in Jamaica. I am asking the children (with their parents' help) to go through their closets and look for any gently used or new items that don't fit them, such as clothing, shoes, socks, hats, and accessories. Think of it as spring-cleaning with an act of kindness attached to it! Students can put the clothing items in a bin by the LD office labeled "Jamaica Cardiac Mission". Since my father leaves on April 1, the clothing drive will be completed by Friday, March 29, so he can bring the clothes with him on the surgery mission. Thank you! Relay for Life is next Friday, April 5. Teacher Appreciation Day is April 10. You will be receiving more on this event from your grade level representatives. Celebrate the Arts is the week of April 15-19. On April 19 we invite you to the children's Celebrate the Arts performance at 11:00AM. This share will be followed by a picnic lunch with your child. (LUNCH ORDER FORMS ARE GOING HOME TODAY.) The children are expected to sit down and eat lunch. They will have recess at another time during the day. Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a restful and fun Spring Break. My daughter's wedding was the highlight of my break. Cherish every moment with your little ones. They grow up so fast!
This week we are back on track with our vocabulary words. They are: diagram, frustrate, frustrating, graduate, prank, primary, risk, risky, stress, urge, vacant
We will test on these words Friday, March 29th.
We will have a spelling test this Friday as well as a math test. Spelling homework this week is a little different. Your child needs to "Get to 50" by selecting items from the list I sent home to help them learn the spelling words. The assignment should not be turned in until Friday. The Friday reading sheet is also due that day.
We began a new class novel today called The Whipping Boy. It involves much vocabulary that requires the children to use context clues to determine the meaning of the word. I am going over each chapter with them and discussing the book along the way. Please be sure to ask your child about this class novel.
This week we are celebrating Reading Week. On Tuesday we will Drop Everything and Read in the morning. If the weather permits, we will go outside with our blankets/towels and enjoy this special time outside. Thursday we have a guest author visiting, and Friday is Oldie Goldie! Fun!

Happy Monday Everyone,
I'm so proud of my class! They work hard in every subject area, and they put on a great show last Friday! All the third grade classes worked very hard to put on the show. Bravo! Also, the cake was not only beautiful, it was yummy! Thank you to everyone for helping.
This week we are trying to "get back to normal". Of course, that's hard to do with Field Day on Thursday and Spring Break starting on Friday! We will wait until after the break for new vocabulary, but we will have a spelling test this Thursday.
We are publishing our realistic fiction stories this week in writer's workshop. The students are also finishing their partner reader books in reading workshop. We are continuing to work with angles in math as well as symmetry this week. In science, we will explore how adding weight will effect our "cars", and in social studies we are discussing the Plains Indians.
Your child has been assigned a color for field day. He/she should wear that color shirt if possible. I'm sure they will have a fun day!

The children will be able to see one another's costumes at Town Meeting that morning! Please be creative, and not feel the need to purchase anything. Oldie Goldie will take place that Friday. We need books donated to help make this a success. Maybe there is a little time during Spring Break to do some spring cleaning of the bookshelves. :-)

Happy Monday!
This week will be a little different since it is show week! We will spend quite a bit of time practicing on the stage this week for our dress rehearsal on Thursday and our performance on Friday. Therefore, we will not have a spelling test or new vocabulary words.
Please remember to send your child's costume to school on Tuesday. We will keep them in the classroom and wear them for rehearsal/performances the remainder of the week.
I can't wait to see the USA cake! We want the completed cake to be a surprise for the children, so please have your child enter in the back door to the classroom on Friday. Parents should drop the cake off in the third grade hallway. I'm sure it will look amazing and taste delicious!
School News:
Class Picture Day is Tuesday. Children should wear their uniforms.
Relay for Life Cook-out is this Thursday. Please remember that Sage is not providing lunch that day. You may purchase a hot dog lunch or you may bring a sack lunch instead.
Field Day will take place on Thursday, March 7 from 9:00-11:00.
Spring Break begins for students on Friday, March 8.
Reading Week will take place the week of March 18-22. The Oldie Goldie Book Sale will be on Friday, March 22nd. We are collecting books now.

This week will be a little different since it is show week! We will spend quite a bit of time practicing on the stage this week for our dress rehearsal on Thursday and our performance on Friday. Therefore, we will not have a spelling test or new vocabulary words.
Please remember to send your child's costume to school on Tuesday. We will keep them in the classroom and wear them for rehearsal/performances the remainder of the week.
I can't wait to see the USA cake! We want the completed cake to be a surprise for the children, so please have your child enter in the back door to the classroom on Friday. Parents should drop the cake off in the third grade hallway. I'm sure it will look amazing and taste delicious!

Class Picture Day is Tuesday. Children should wear their uniforms.
Relay for Life Cook-out is this Thursday. Please remember that Sage is not providing lunch that day. You may purchase a hot dog lunch or you may bring a sack lunch instead.
Field Day will take place on Thursday, March 7 from 9:00-11:00.
Spring Break begins for students on Friday, March 8.
Reading Week will take place the week of March 18-22. The Oldie Goldie Book Sale will be on Friday, March 22nd. We are collecting books now.

Happy Tuesday!
We had a wonderful Valentine's Day! The children were very excited about their Valentine boxes.
Everyone did a great job, which made it difficult for the two classes that voted! But the winners were...Duncan with Funniest Box, Sabrina with Most Romantic Box, and a tie between Emma and Luke for Most Creative Box.
This week and next week the students will be hard at work practicing for their third grade program next Friday. We will not have new vocabulary words since we need the additional class time to prepare. We will, however, have a spelling test this Friday. I hope finding a costume and gathering ideas for the state cake is going well. Please email me for suggestions if you need assistance.

Hello Everyone!
This Friday is a Professional Development Day for teachers, so we will have our spelling test on Thursday. We will also have a vocabulary test that day as well.
This Thursday is Valentine's Day, and I can't wait to see the creative Valentine boxes! The children have been talking about how excited they are to share their creations! We will have a sweet treat and pass out Valentine's before going to Spanish in the afternoon. Please refer to the family directory for a list of children's names.
Today we started partnership reading in Reading Workshop. Please be sure to ask your child the book they selected and how it's going so far. We are continuing to write Realistic Fiction stories in Writer's Workshop. Our math unit will remain focused on geometry this week. We will have another lesson in motion and design this week as we experiment with our cars in science. Our social studies lessons this week will center around the Anasazi Indians. Of course, we will also practice for our show!
If you wish to place a book order, please send in the order with a check payable to Scholastic by Wednesday.

Happy Monday Everyone!
We greatly enjoyed our field trip to the Tampa Bay History Center last Thursday! The children were able to explore the center and view their extensive collection of artifacts, paintings, textiles, and documents that date from prehistoric Gulf Coast Florida to the present.
This Thursday is Conference Day. Some of the conferences are happening at alternate days/times. Please see below for your scheduled time.

This Thursday is our field trip to the Tampa Bay History Museum. We are very excited to visit since we studied about native Florida tribes. If you are planning to meet us at the museum please let me know so that we can look for you.
Also, we are having a meeting in Ms. LaDuke's classroom tomorrow at 11:30 to discuss the third grade program as well as the infamous USA cake. If you are interested in helping with decorations for the program or helping with the cake, please attend this informative meeting.
This Friday we will have a spelling and vocabulary test.

Grandparents Day will take place this Friday. There is a noon dismissal on that day. If your child does not have a grandparent or special friend, I will be happy to pair them up with someone who does.

Hello Everyone!
It was nice to see so many of our parents at Town Meeting today. The children did a nice job presenting information about Martin Luther King, Jr. I was very proud of them!
This Friday we will have a spelling test as well as a quiz over vocabulary words.
Other class news...
We will finish Sarah, Plain and Tall this week and have a reading quiz over the material. We are also continuing our work with writing realistic fiction. In math we are working with tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. Our unit in Social Studies will focus on Native American groups in the United States. We will begin a unit in Science called Motion and Design. The students will be working in small groups during this unit. They will not only learn scientific concepts, but they will also need to cooperate with one another.
Our first field trip will be on Thursday, January 31. We will go to the Tampa Bay History Museum. I can take one chaperone. The first person to respond to this request will get admission free of charge and be able to ride with us on the school bus. Additional chaperones can attend, but will need to pay their own admission as well as drive themselves due to limited space on the bus.

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. I certainly enjoyed having time to travel as well as catch up on some things at home. But, it's also a great feeling to be back at work! We have a lot to do, and I'm eager for the children to begin some new units of instruction.
We are beginning a new writing unit focusing on realistic fiction. We will be using the read aloud Because of Winn Dixie as well as the class novel Sarah Plain and Tall to enhance our reading and writing workshops.
Our new vocabulary words are: contain, container, digest, finicky, habit, hinge, marsh, marshy, nursery, rely, reliable, spine, thrive
We will have a spelling test this Friday. The children will also have a social studies this Friday focusing on Waterways of the United States. Please look at the map skills sent home today to refer to the waterways.
Our math lessons this week will be about very large numbers and an introduction to decimal notation for tenths and hundredths.
We were very fortunate to have a fun-filled and informative science lesson from Mr. Schneider. He used the scientific method with the students to demonstrate chemicals and chemical reactions. The students loved it! They also loved visiting his room and feeling like "high schoolers"! Thank you, Mr. Schneider!
